Hi folks, new member – first post. I have a question about the hammer – bolt relation on a 1886. When the bolt is fully to the rear should there clearance between the top of the hammer and the bottom of the bolt?

I just checked mine and there is not be any clearance between them since the bolt is what pushes the hammer to the cock position. When you work the action does the hammer go to full cock?

Yes, it cocks but as the bolt travels past the hammer it pushes very hard against the bottom of the bolt, making the action very hard to cycle. I think the main spring is to strong or the bolt is a little to tall. Very hard to cycle.

Put a little grease on the bottom of the bolt and see if that helps. I believe there is a spring tension adjuster just like the 73’s have, check that to see if its been turned in.

Thanks for the reply Bob. Lack of lube is not the problem. I’ll check for the tensioner when I get a chance.
