If a customer wanted one, I don’t think they ever did stop.

Steel Crescent butt plates were available until the bitter end of the Mode 1886 production. Currently, S/N 158568 is the highest confirmed 33 WCF rifle with a crescent (rifle) butt plate.
While the standard butt plate for the 33 WCF rifles was the black hard rubber w/logo, a steel crescent and steel shot gun butt plates (both smooth and checkered) were available for those that wanted them. I will discuss this in further detail in the article discussing the late production Model 1886 rifles.
