Hi all, Im restoring an old 1886 that belonged to my great great grandfather. I’ve received a factory report on it. My current barrel is absolutely torched. Sawed off and all dove tails smashed, extraordinary pitting… so

Does anyone have a 40-82 octagon barrel for a rifle model? I could put a remake on it but that doesn’t seem right. I can’t find anything for sale online

i have a goal to take my father out and a shoot this gun with him

What kind of condition is the rest of the rifle in?

Let me add, this sounds like a wonderful family heirloom – your great great grandfather’s rifle!  Do you know the last time it was hunted?  Do you have any other restoration in mind other than the barrel replacement?

pretty bad. Forend is smashed to pieces. I was able to order a replacement. Magazine tube is smashed. Was able to get one of those as well. Receiver is ok but has some ding on top from being thrown around for 127 years. Had to drill out 5 different screws because nobody apparently had a screwdriver back then haha. So I have a nuts and bolt kit coming as well. Butt stock is ok enough but I’m not sure how I will ever get it to match a replacement forend. Last time of operation was at least 60 years ago. I’ll put some pictures of my project on here in the morning. If I have to replace the barrel with a remake I am going to re blue and case harden the receiver. This is not more monetary value and I will never sell. So no issue to me that I may re case harden.

It’s great to hear that you want to keep the rifle in the family.  The fact that you have no thought to ever sell it means there is no need for to restore it in any way other than what pleases you and fits your taste.  I did spot a .40-82 barrel currently on Ebay but unfortunately it was a round barrel.  Barrels are out there.  Other members on this forum may have some leads.  I wish you well in your project.

I seen that one actually! Unfortunately yes a round barrel. I’ve scored the internet. I’ll hold out for a while. Hopefully ones pops up

I got to take a caribou with a rifle my grandpa bought brand new. An 1895 in .405. My dad was with me on the hunt as were 2 of my uncles and 1 of my brothers.

Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.
