Looking for evaluation on this 1886 38-70. Does have 26 in barrel, correct sights I think, wood not sanded. Bore is shiny, but rifling is thin. What’s it worth? Hello Paul,

Based on what I can see of your Model 1886 rifle in the pictures you posted, it is a “brown” gun.  On the plus side, it is a 38-70 WCF.  It would help to see better pictures that show the entire rifle (both sides, front to back).

Thanks Bert. Found it while assisting a friend at a local store w a Winchester mod 70. The shop is asking $2500. I thought it prudent to check here to see if it’s worth it. They are holding it for me for a few days.

Based on that price tag, I do not believe that you can go wrong.  The relative rarity of that caliber will easily make it worth that much if the rifle is sound.

I agree with Bert although it doesn’t have a lot of finish, it is unmolested, the wood appears to fit good, unsanded! The 38-70 is scarce, I would pay the price for it! Good Luck!

Pending a more thorough inspection, I’d pay that for it.  I’ve never owned a .38-70.
