JackTheDog has a model 1886 .45-70 extra lightweight with a Cody search form on GunAuction. Sn 151375.
http://www.gunauction.com/buy/12711375

The search form lists the following:
.45-70
round bbl
22"
extra light
1/2 mag
shotgun butt rubber
nickel steel
smokeless

Out of the above specifics, which are truly special order items? My guess is the last 4 items (1/2 mag, shotgun butt, nickel steel and smokeless) b/c the .45-70 at that point in time was a standard 22" extra light. Is this accurate?

Thanks – Greg

I would like to see if the butt stock has been hollowed ❓ I suspect it has but would like to confirm. Good looking gun with nice letter, especially showing shipping address.

Based on when that ELW was manufactured, none of its features are "special" order with the possible exception of the Nickel Steel smokeless barrel. The rest of the rifle’s features were standard as listed in the catalog.

So based on the catalogs, were the standard ELW rifles of that time period offered only in 33 and 45-70? I know on pg 48 in Madl’s publication "Identifying Your Model 1886 Winchester" he states that the 45 cal had a standard 22" bbl, which to me implies that it’s possible that say a 45-90 was offered as a standard ELW with a 22" bbl. But I normally see 45-70s on the market with 22" bbls. Thanks for the clarification.

The catalogs listed only the 45-70 for the ELW rifles. Any other caliber would have been special ordered. I have seen ELW rifles in 45-90, 38-56, and 33 WCF.

I am not much of a Winchester Model 1886 fan, but would a Model 1886 in 33WCF Caliber, 22" Round Barrel, Ramp Front Sight, Full Length Magazine be considered a Extra Light Weight Rifle?

Mark,

If it has a shotgun hard rubber butt plate, I would call it that. Winchester very specifically offered the ".33 Caliber Winchester Smokeless Model 1886" with a 24-inch barrel only. Longer or shorter barrels were not offered. I have seen several Model 1886 rifles in 33 WCF with a 22-inch barrel, and they were ELWs.
