looking at an 1885 in 30-40 Krag

no serial number

in excellent shape, maybe too good

did the issue 1885s without serial number

No, Winchester did not. As originally manufactured and shipped, all Model 1885 Single Shots had a serial number on the lower tang.

Lower tangs without serial numbers were usually shipped by Winchester to dealers and/or gunsmiths for outside repairs.
