Hello I’m new to this forum and new to Winchesters. I am not new to collecting and if I find something that I haven’t seen before I try to buy it. There are of corse many variables in that last sentence. I found and bought a high wall ser#30409 and I’ve requested a factory letter on the rifle. The barrel is marked 40-90 B. As I understand it the B stands for Ballard? Can anyone tell me how many high walls where chambered for the 40-90 B. Does anyone have experience shooting this round. If so what components where used.
Thanks
Gerry
Hello Gerry,
Winchester manufactured just (120) high-wall rifles chambered for the 40-90 Ballard cartridge, and serial number 30409 was one of them. The 40-90 Ballard cartridge was very similar to the slightly more common 40-90 Sharps Straight, and the two share many of the same components. The primary difference is the case length (2-15/16″ for the Ballard versus 3.25″ for the Sharps Straight.
The bottom high-wall in my signature picture is a Fancy Sporting Rifle in 40-90 Ballard.
