Madis says that 1885’s with a # 1 barrel should have the groove in the top of the receiver. I have one, made in 1889, that has the standard round-top style receiver. It is 32 WCF caliber with # 1 octagon barrel. Did I miss something on this detail ?

Is your rifle a high-wall, or a low-wall? What is the serial number?

It is a thinside highwall, and the S/N is 41485.

That explains it. You did not miss anything, but apparently Madis did… only the low-wall rifle receiver frames were made with the milled groove. Your high-wall is exactly as it should be.
