OnlineJust like the early 73’s the 76’s were not caliber marked when they were only made in one caliber. Once they came out with more than one caliber they started to mark them.
There is a book called “The Winchester 1876 Centennial Rifle” by Herb Houze, there is one on ebay for $300 or you have the Madis book which covers the 76 along with the other models.

OnlineI only owned one of them but similar to the 73 when they introduced the other calibers they marked them but not the original caliber until sometime later. The one that I had was serial number 16999 which is 1881 and it was not marked.
