You will need to provide a complete serial number, and if possible, photos of the subject Model 1873.

Leaf,

Here are the photos. It came back as a carbine but you didn’t have the complete number, there is a missing digit. I see 14388XA, 14388 would of been a first model gun and you have a third model. There is a digit between the last 8 and the “A”. You might have to clean the rust a bit.

What is the measurement from the end of the barrel to the middle of the front sight? In the picture it looks to be set farther back than normal. Also what is the length of the forearm wood?

If I had to hazard a guess I’d say the last numeral is a “4”.

Wondered about another digit. If anything it would be a 4 or 1..pretty faded if its there? Measurement to front site center is 1 1/16. Wood is 9 3/8. Having no idea on my end what says third gen other than serial number?

Leaf,

A first model gun has a dust cover that held in by a mortise machined in the top of the receiver and the lever will not have the flat lug at the front top of the finger loop that pushes the trigger block safety. A second model with have the dust cover rail screwed to the top of the receiver and it has the trigger pivot pin exposed on the outside of the receiver. The third model has the dust cover rail machined out of the top of the receiver.

If the forearm is 9 3/8″, its the standard length for a 24″ or longer barreled gun. When they went to a 22″ barrel, they shortened the forearm to 8 3/8″. Your next step is to determine the complete serial number and check it with Cody. My guess if that gun has  22″ barrel it might letter with a barrel longer than 24″ and was shortened or someone changed the barrel.

What is the measurement from the end of the barrel to the middle of the magazine band?

Leif,

That is why I thought the front sight was off. The distance of the mag band should be around 3 3/4″. The barrel has been shortened.
