Looks like my kind of rifle.  Loading port spring cover looks new/replacement.  The screw head on the lower tang looks strange.  The finish looks like it went bad and then someone tried to clean it up.  But I don’t go for the fancy stuff.  If closer examination didn’t show anything worse, I’d pay $1,000.00 but I bet others would go $1,500.00.  I am NO expert.  Here to learn what others say.

Thank you, Huck I appreciate your insight and opinion. The fella selling it states it’s original but it seems everyone says that…he’s asking $1900

Don,

You said it was case colored, Do you have a letter on it or did you look under the side plates? If it was its long gone. The value of the case color is only if there is some left on it. Once the case is gone the value is gone. That gun is worth $1200 in todays market.

No I don’t. That’s per the current owner and What he said his gunsmith told him. Thank you for the valuation. I have not laid hands or eyes on the rifle.

Unfortunately, most “gunsmiths” don’t know anything about antique firearms.  Like 1873 man said, you should be able to tell if it had been case colored by pulling the side plates.  Otherwise a Cody  letter is your best bet.  In my opinion $1900 is way over the top.  This is only a $1200 to $1500 Winchester, at best.  The condition can only be graded as good.  If bore is fair and action tight, it might make a good shooter.

I’m in the $1200 valuation range as well and agree with the comments above.  In my mind, the key comment above is from 1873 man:  “… in today’s market.”  I find that many sellers continue to price their items in line with yesterday’s market.  That’s why lots of sellers are sitting on what they have.

My observation of “today’s market” is that it’s nearly flooded with guns of similar condition to this one. Not only will it bring less than many collectors/dealers think it should but it will be hard to sell. As noted above it could be a solid shooter if the bore and action are sound. I think if you’ll be patient and keep looking you’ll find a better gun for $1900.

I agree with Mike. I sold a very similar ‘73 for $1100 and had a hell of a time doing that at $1100.

$1900 could go a long way at a show….
