Hi

Are round barrel 1873s considered a semi-heavy barrel as they weigh more? George Madis states only 1 in 6 had these.

Walter,

No, Actually a octagon barrel is heavier than the round barrel by weight.

Walter,

No they didn’t, If you measure a octagon across the flats and a round barrel they will be the same or real close. What does yours  measure?

Bob,

I will check tomorrow but I think the same diameter. Will weigh both guns as best I can.

Walter,

To compare apples to apples they have to be the same caliber.

Bob,

Why the caliber, as the 32-20 is not that munch smaller. It is interesting to start a new post on the 1873s.

Walter,

Barrels of the different calibers are different sizes plus the bore size will change the weight.

Bob,

I think you are trying to split atoms here.  I still think there is a conversion here

Walter,

What I was responding to is you said you were going to weight both guns and I assume to compare barrel weights, correct? The only thing I am saying is if The guns are of different caliber they will have a different weight because of the different bore size and if ones a 44 it will have a larger outside diameter. What are the calibers of the two guns?

Walter,

I completely agree with Bob, and he quite frankly is not trying to “split atoms”.

If you take two identical length barrels, with identical outside diameters, but one is a 32 WCF and the second is a 38 WCF, the 32 WCF barrel will weigh more, and appear to be a larger barrel.  It is simple physics… a .320 diameter hole removes less steel from a .750 diameter barrel than does a .401 diameter hole in the same .750 diameter barrel.

Also all thing being identical including Cal and muzzle dimension , the points of the Oct figure have to be turned off to make it round, reducing the weight on the round configuration

( I think that was Bob’s initial point , if all being equal )

Hi,

The round barrel in 44 WCF measures .823 at the muzzle which I see  is standard. Weight is 8 pounds. The oct. in  32 WCF measures .772  at the muzzle  which is standard. Weight is 7 pounds. I stand corrected. I  have a lot  of books, maybe I should read them.

Regards

Walter
