When did the first ELW’s come out?

Apr 25, 1898 from what I researched on this forum.

Rick,
I suspect that the notation “shotgun butt Model 73” refers to the dimensional size of the stock and butt plate on your Model 1886. Somebody wanted a slightly smaller sized stock.

I didn’t have a 73 to compare but I was able to compare a buddy’s standard 86 with shotgun butt & mine is slightly smaller. I will try to get some measurements next time but I think Bert is correct here.

Rick –

Thanks for posting.  I like it!  It certainly looks like an ELW to me.  I favor the shotgun butt and with the ledger information, this one is most interesting.  I can’t say that just by looking at the photos, I see that the buttstock/buttplate looks different from what I have seen on other SGB M1886’s.  Does anyone else notice a difference?  It looks all original with many stories to tell.  Do you know the history of the rifle?

Sorry I didn’t take pics of the buttplates together when I compared them. This rifle with the 73 plate appeared slightly longer & narrower toward the bottom. Bob or someone might be able to advise if this is consistent with 73 buttplates.
