Walter,
There are all kinds of redone, restored and refinished guns on all the auction house. I see quite a few of Turnbull’s on the sites. Usually the guns with the cheap restores and home cold blue jobs end up on the low end auction houses.

They tend to show up at the shows quite a bit too. About every time I make it to Tulsa there are at least a hand full of recased rifles, most of the time they are 86’s. No one seems to get the right colors though so they are easier to spot. The ones that are tough are those recased and then the case hardening is worn down a bit to 30-40%.

Hey Wally;
If you want to see “RE-CASED”, in my opinion you just have to check out about 90+% of almost any “High Condition” Dealer and most of the auctions that handle these beautiful Case Colored firearms. The key word when it comes to Case Colored Finishes, finishes that are supossed to be over 100 years of age, “Oxidation”. The second Winchester 1873 that I purchased “Lettered”. The letter described the firearm as having a cased hardened finish. It was manufactured in 1879. I bought it in 1977. The finish on the metal when I got it was a dark blue-black-brownish patina. In natural sunlight you can still see through the patina some Case Colors”, mostly darkish blues and very, very faint redish purples. I must say that D.T. has done wonders for the Winchester, Marlin, Kennedy and Remington Antique firearms. They shore er purty, ain’t they?
