Hey Eveyone. I have an 1873 1st model. Serial number less than 20,000. Its missing the mortise cover.  I was told any model mortise cover will work I just need all the parts ? I was told I’m missing 5 parts total ? From what I understand the 1st model dust cover is the only one that will work ? The one with the thumb print. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please ?

I attached a picture and hope it shows ? I had to make the picture smaller so hope you csn see it ok !

Thanks ! Ed

Ed,

From what I see you need the dust cover, stop screw and the dust cover stop. You can only use the first model cover. They make repos of the dust cover but even those are in short supply these days. You can keep a eye on Ebay for originals.

Thanks Bob ! I was 99% sure I could only use the 1st model dust cover on my rifle but the guy I was talking with said different so it got me wondering. I think the other models can be changed from one to the other so maybe he thought all of them could be. Ill keep an eye out for an original but I don’t think spending the money for one will bring the value up enough to make it worth while ?

Ed,

Also keep an eye on Homestead Gun Parts for a repo. They are out of stock now.
