This is my first post. I have recently acquired my first ’73 rifle. The delivery date to the warehouse, was April 9, 1880. The shipping date was April 10, 1880. There is an invoice number, but no further info. It is in excellent condition, other than having turned gray. I have had it to the range, putting 10 rounds of .44 black powder through it. The bore is in great shape. It has a round barrel. It appears to have a heavy barrel. I mic’d both ends. It measures 0.8180 at the muzzle and 0.9475 just forward of the receiver. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Robadams,

I have done quite a bit of research on the 73’s including barrel size and the measurements you give are just a few thousands over the average size for a standard barrel. What is the serial number and its configuration? I will add it to my survey of 73’s. The Round barrel accounts for 26.7% of the rifles.

Don,

Thanks, what makes people think they have a heavy barrel gun on the early guns is they milled the bottom of the barrel so the tube was tighter to the barrel and when you saw the barrel wrapping around the tube some it gave the appearance of a heavy barrel.
