I have finally gotten up the courage to take my rifle apart and clean the 100+ years of grease out of the action.  Every thing looks good once cleaned up and I will put it back together tomorrow.  Everything is straight forward but I do have a question on the hammer spring.  On the lower tang there is a machine screw 1/2 ” forward of the main screw securing the spring.  What is the purpose of this screw?  I have heard it is to adjust tension on the spring; if so how should it be adjusted?  I assume it should be backed out when the main screw is used to tighten the hammer spring.

Thank-you, JimB

Jim,

The Tension screw is only adjusted if you have misfires from not hitting the primer hard enough but that can also come from dirt and grime around the firing pin in the bolt. Most of the time it does not need to be used at all.

Bob, Thanks

As much tension as that spring puts on my hammer I doubt light hammer fall will be a problem.

Thank-you, JimB

When reassembling the action you should have the trigger spring tension screw backed out enough so it makes no contact with the flat spring.  If is does protrude from the bottom of the tang it will increase the tension and make it slightly tougher to install the spring.  When you first take the assembled rifle out to the range, fire it with the tension screw backed out enough so that is doesn’t touch the spring.  Then, if necessary, you can start adding a little tension if needed to ensure the primer detonates every time.
