Poor pictures – I know.
I’ve been offered this 1873 chambered in 32 WCF. SN: 258261
It’s a deluxe pg checkered with what looks like at least xx wood. It was at one time plated although I can’t be sure if factory done or not as the remaining finish is quite poor.
Id say the tang sight is later than the gun – which dates to the late 1880s I believe.
Bore is surprisingly good.
I dont mind the condition, but the right side forearm kills me. One thing it does do is give a larger view into the plating on the barrel.
Again – pictures suck! Price has not been negotiated. I’m guessing he will want around $2k
Id be interested in everyone’s thoughts. Maybe this one’s already on a survey or has been lettered?
For $2000 its a deal. You would want to check how it letters Cody but even if the plating or what ever is on it does not letter its still worth it.

Thanks Bob,
I’d hoped to hear from you.
I believe by the time I sent for and I received a Cody letter, the seller will have already parted with it and I don’t want to miss out.
He didn’t advertise it as a deluxe or plated. So my hope is that by his underrepresenting it, it might be authentic,
He also has an 1886 chambered in 40-65 that appears to have a plated receiver – also not high condition or advertised as such.
I’m assuming the tang sight isn’t correct but can’t remember when they started being a factory option.
The wood on the gun is dark and aged, a piece of wood can be graphed in and darkened. It won’t be perfect but neither is the gun.
Find out how it letters and then figure out what you have, until then don’t worry about it. Restoration is not practical but repair is and can be done at anytime in the future. One step at a time. T/R
The ledgers sometimes listed the grade of wood but if the gun is a checkered, pistol grip, casehardened gun they always had fancy wood. If a deluxe gun didn’t have fancy wood it would of said Plain wood.
A hands on inspection would be need to tell what the plating is but if its not tarnished it not silver so I would guess nickel and you never know if it was done during the R&R. A look under the sideplates and at any marking on the side of the lower tang would give you some clues.
