Purchased an 1873 carbine at auction. The firearm was a general factory issue in1800.
It has engraved on the left side ( J B Gillett City Marshall El Paso Texas ) The right side is Engraved (May 18th 1895)
the left side stock has a brass Texas logo inlaid.
Mr. Gillett was City Marshall of El Paso and left in 1885 to become Marshall of other towns and raise cattle in Marfa Texas.
He was also an author and is in the Texas Ranger hall of fame.
The carbine was purchased by ex Mayor Steve Reed of Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Mr. Reed had ntentions of building an old west Museum.
Mr. Reed was brought up on several charges, lost the election and his collector Items were sold at auction.
no records were found on most of the items. The carbine sold at that 7 day auction for a substantial amount.
Has anyone heard of this Winchester?
would like post pictures if there is a way.
Thanks
Bud

Bud,
It is not in my survey. Your next step would be to get a letter on it from Cody and see if it says anything about the inscription.

Bud,
Its says next to your username your a guest not a member. If you are not a paid member you can’t post the pictures directly to the site. As a guest you have to upload the pictures to a third party host and then link to them. If you are a new paid member you will have to contact a administrator to correct your membership. Once the system says your a member you will see a “Upload Attachments” at the bottom of the reply window.

Just read a bit about Gillett; in his days as a frontier Texas Ranger he did indeed put another 1873 (or possibly an 1866) to good use fighting Indians and outlaws before leaving the Rangers to be a marshal. Very interesting man. Provenance would certainly help this carbine.

Sounds like you purchased an ‘Electronics Only Membership’. If you haven’t gone through the “Current WACA member First-Time Login”, you’ll need to complete that in order to log in as your “new” self instead of as a ‘Guest’. Look for that process under the ‘Membership’ drop down menu in the title bar above…
