Tony,
Winchester did make 73’s with a shotgun butt plate. The stock shape was a little different than a crescent butt plate stock. As far as telling if it correct you can check the serial number with the the Cody Firearms museum which has the factory records or post some good pictures of the gun and we can probable tell you if it right.

I went to check out the 73 again. Butt stock was steel shotgun style. My friend who came with me said he thought the barrel was a heavy type. Comparing to his round barrel 73. My next question is did the model 73 round barrel guns have such a thing as bull type barrels ?
Tony,
Yes they did make extra heavy barrels in all calibers and barrel shapes and lengths. Your friends 73, was it a 44-40? if not it would have a smaller barrel. If you have the serial number I can check it.

Tony,
It letters as a standard round barrel rifle. No shotgun butt. No heavy barrel.

I took another look today after I read your reply. Barrel measured 1 3/4 wide on the sight end. I purchased the 73 knowing there was no collector value (refinished). I wanted to see how it was going to letter, even though I made up my mind to purchase it. Many of my collector guns end up being safe queens. I was thinking about a Navy Arms 1873 put the price was considerable higher. With a good bore and a well done restoration there wasn’t even a second thought on going with the rebuilt original. I’ll try and post some pictures later .
Thanks for your help
Tony
Tony,
If it measures 1.75″ at the muzzle that is the biggest barrel ever screwed to a 73. It must stick out over the receiver big time. A normal extra heavy barrel measures 1″. Does the forearm fit over the barrel? I would like to see pictures of it.

Tony,
.75″ is standard for the 44.

Tony,
It looks like it will be a good shooter if the bore is good. The reason its case colored is its been refinished. According to the letter it would of left the factory blued with a crescent butt plate.
