Hi,

I am curious about the 7 leaf rear sight on ’73s and 76s. Why did Winchester install this sight sent to England to be used in hunting in Africa? Maybe back in the day it was not a short shot? I have noticed some want a large premium for this sight.

Walter,

I think Americans were more practical and figured that sight had too many moving parts and could break too easy.

The other thing I didn’t like about the 7 leaf is that you have a short sighting radius as compared to a tang sight.

Walter,

It rarity of the sight but what they don’t take into account is the British proofs that turn off collectors at least for me.

Bob,

I havent seen too many of either model with the 7 leaf express but are you saying that many of the rifles you have seen have British (or other) proofs indicating most with the configuration were sent overseas. Not to put you on the spot, just curious of what you have observed.  Many of the ones I have seen did have British proofs  but there are some that dont (like the 76 in my tag that also has a vernier tang sight and beeches front–falls in the last couple hundred SN made, shipped with 7 or 8 others like it).  I find the sight burdensome myself, but I guess if you wanted the best of all worlds in open-sight of the day they were on the higher end of the spectrum.

Chris,

I have 28 with 7 leaf sights in my survey but I’m just going from memory about the foreign proofs. The proofs were not tracked.

I’ve been watching that sight with the tang since it went up on Ebay. I looked at the sight close but haven’t looked at enough of them to determine if its a repo or not. Its just too nice looking. I did add the information to my survey.

Bob,

I find it a bit odd that someone would “part out” a ’73 in this configuration. The add does not show the lower tang, as I reminder.

Walter,

It does show the tang. You have to click the arrow to the right of the thumb nail pictures. The tang looks kind of poor condition.
