As they say – buy the gun and not the story! The marking looks factory applied and I have not seen one before: however, the gun is heavily refinished and the serial number appears to 38307 which would make it an antique……………

The seller says number is 838307, although I can’t see the first "8"

Hello,

The serial number 838307 would be correct for the tang stamp style on the rifle. A 38307 rifle would have a tang stamp with the parent date on the bottom line.

Rick or any one willing to elaborate. What are some of the indicators your looking at when saying refinished? I just want to see if I’m getting better or better at guessing! 8)

Steve:

Easiest indicator is the crude polishing marks. They all run in one direction. Also, the finish on the wood doesn’t match the finish on the wood which shows much more wear.

Thank you! Those screws look turned to me a few are show obvious buggering but they all appear turned. Also I would think they would use a little better wood on a "Big deal award of this nature"? Nothing very fancy about this gun even the engraving is department store looking to me!

You can also see the screw holes are dish out some along with the bad buffing job.

Some other observations on my part are:
• Photo #2 – What’s with that demarcation line in the bluing around the staple?
• #5 – The stock wood by the receiver looks sanded below the upper tang.
• # 10 and 17 – The marks in the wood in front of the screw holes of the barrel band indicate its removal.
• #8, 10, 16, 17 – The stain just looks blotchy and off color.
• #14 – The depressed mark behind the loading gate doesn’t look right and two screws look like they have slot wear.
• #19 The tang screw has slot pressure scaring.
• Finally the absence of a reserve. LOL

Hi Al:

No, I had missed that! I saw the 2 Spruce guns though. I don’t think you ought to consider trading it for your S.F.P.D. carbine……………
