OfflineI recently purchased an 1892 Winchester SN 5759XX with the barrel caliber marked .25-20.
When going through it to clean it up I have determined it has a .32-20 Chamber and barrel.
It does not appear to have been worked over and in fair condition. The rifling and interior of the barrel
is excellent. I called Cody and checked to see what a letter would say about the caliber and their records
do not go back that far. Does anyone out there ever found a caliber mismarked firearm shipped from the factory?
Has anybody ever seen such a mistake made by Winchester?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject.
Thanks

OfflineDon-
Take a look at the bottom of the barrel, if unsure take and post a few good pics of the stampings.

OnlineThe odds of it being a factory mismarked caliber are extremely miniscule. Based on your description of the exterior condition of the rifle versus the bore and rifling, I highly suspect that the barrel was rebored & rechambered for the 32-20 cartridge. It is very unlikely that that a “fair” condition Model 1892 has an “excellent” condition bore & rifling.

Especially in that caliber. A good number of the 25-20’s I’ve looked at have roached bores, so re-boring and re-chambering would not be a surprise.

Hello Don,
If you will post some additional images of the gun and the stamped writing on the barrel I will be happy to take a look and advise. I have looked at more than 22,000 individual rifles while working on my research survey of the 1892’s And have a pretty good idea of what should be correct for any SN range. [email protected]
