Hi Bert,

Just came across this one on Gunbroker.  Do you think it’s legit?  If so, do you have it in your survey?

Don,

This is a new entry for the survey, and it becomes the 5th Model 71 rifle verified in the 33 WCF cartridge.  It is a factory original rifle, but it was actually manufactured in late 1942 versus 1946.  It is a rare rifle and will most likely sell for the asking price.

Thanks,

Bert

The stocks have been sanded/refinished

If you can’t convince them, confuse them

I agree, but it was not a harsh (or overly aggressive) job.  The rarity of the cartridge chambering is going to cause most collectors to overlook the slightly undersized wood (at least in my opinion).

That’s great Bert.  Glad to hear it’s original and not a fake.  I would love to own it but it’s definitely out of my price range.

Five of them thus far.  I am aware of a 6th, but I have not yet been able to get the details on it.  The table below is the copied from my current survey file.

Model 71 Cartridge Designation Surveyed Qty. % of Total Extrapolated Qty.
348 W.C.F. 2,723 90.225% 42,635
348 WIN. 282 9.344% 4,415
33 W.C.F. 5 0.166% 78
45-70 5 0.166% 78
308 W.C.F. 2 0.066% 2
None 1 0.033% 1
Total 3,018

I am always on the lookout for more Model 71s to add to the survey.

Thank Bert!

And while were at it, the .308 WCF is certainly of interest.   What the heck? Confused

Steve,

Did you not read my article in the Summer 2021 edition of the WACA Collector magazine?  Better yet, read Dan Shuey’s article in the Winter 2018 edition of the of the WACA Collector magazine first, then read my article.

Bert

p.s. There will be a test tomorrow Laugh

Good for you Steve , they are of course excellent articles. If I had half of Bert’s brain power I ‘d be rich. And yes I can sympathize with the memory thing! I walked in to a room today chasing a steam leak and when I got off the elevator I kinda forgot where I was. Fortunately my son was there and I snapped too.Surprised

Steve,

Love him or hate him, Bill Cosby did a wonderfully accurate description of the condition many of us suffer in our latter years… it is titled “49”

If you have an hour to kill, you might find it enlightening… Bing Videos
