I have a model 57 long rifle that I am pretty sure was purchased in 1928.
serial # is 20916 . It has a rear circular sight mounted from the side and also a flip down. The odd thing is that it seems to be stainless but is not marked stainless. There is no rust and the bore looks like new. There is only evidence of blueing right under the rear sight which I am wondering if it transferred some how. The saddest part is that the bolt has been forever lost. There is not a bit of rust and no scratches on stock.
Hello Tony,
Bare (polished or buffed) steel looks an awful lot like stainless steel. Winchester very clearly marked their barrels “STAINLESS STEEL” on the rare occasion when someone ordered it. Additionally, Winchester painted the stainless steel barrels with black lacquer because bluing is a form of rust, and the stainless does not rust.

Below are pics of correct under barrel stamping for model 57 Stainless Steel barreled model.
The “217” stamping is the bore diameter. This would be the hole size prior to rifling. You can only see part of this number on mine. The number was partially obliterated when dovetail was machined.
Pretty sure the 37962 is most likely a Winchester return/repair control number that was stamped on barrel. Your rifle was most likely sent back to the factory at some point for some type of repair or change.

I wish I could post up a picture. Your picture looks a lot like mine. Metal looks the same
You can send pictures via email to me and I can post them for you. I would love to see your rifle, thanks for contributing to the WACA forum!
