OfflineAs many of you know I have almost completed a book on these shotguns but I have hit a hitch with 1969-1972 Trap and Skeet models. Part of it is that I do not have many examples from this period, but otherwise, Winchester never displayed images of the “UTILITY” Models. These were described (in 1970) as “Model 1200 Trap Gun (with) Field grade walnut stock with Monte Carlo stock $159.95; With semi-fancy walnut stock and forearm $194.95. Semi fancy walnut with Monte Carlo $204.95.” The Model 1400s were also advertised similarly but the Skeet guns were included. The “Field grade walnut stock” was described as the Model 1200 “UTILITY” Trap, etc., in the Dealers Catalogs Unfortunately Winchester did not provide an illustration, and I do not have a photo of such a gun in my database, and were only offered in 1970, 1971 and 1972, so would be in the serial number range # L483000 to # L739617. I have attached
I have a Winchester letter about them “Model 1200 1400 Introduction of Low Cost Utility Skeet Guns 6Jan 1970 HR Fallon.pdf”, which leads me to the opinion that they used plain walnut but still had the same Fleur de Lys Checkering pattern on the stock and the forearm.
Can anyone verify this. If so I would appreciate good photos which are suitable for publication. I am also short of good photos of other Trap and Skeet models in this serial number range.
If anyone does send me photos including the serial number I will advise the Year of Manufacture and the date the serial number was applied. Whilst pphotos should be uplifted to the Forum, they can also be sent to [email protected], or my Forum Mail Box
Post Script: – I have not been able to upload the file, so here are a few sentences:
PCA # 201 October 13 1969
“This PCA pertain to the introduction of the low-priced (utility) Models 1200 and 1400 Trap and Skeet guns.. The only difference will be that these guns will be fitted with a plain walnut foreams and Stock.”, And
“Maintaining a fixed point where plain wood tops and semi-fancy begins is just about impossible .. It is not unusual to have a trap or Skeet stock on our present guns with no figure and very few of the forearms have even a trace of burl.”
