Bert,Here’s another model 94/95 carbine. Do you have this one in your survey?
Don
Don,
Yes I have it in the survey. Leroy’s written description is a bit off the mark though. Specifically, the 20-inch barrel is by far the more common variation of the 94/95 hybrid, with a 49:15 ratio. The total number of identified Model 94/95 hybrids is currently at (64).

Are there any other visual cues to identify this hybrid other than the front sight?

Another cue is the absence of the front barrel band and the presence of a rifle type magazine retainer. All should be 1928 serialized guns. Merz has another one for sale in the first link below. Take a look at photo #7 comparing a 94/95 hybrid carbine to a standard carbine. The 94/95’s also have a 1/10 twist vs. the standard 1/12 twist for .30 WCF chamberings. There were actually 3 variants of the 94/95 depending on which style of 1895 barrel they used. Rick Hill wrote an excellent article regarding these in the Summer 2012 Winchester Collector magazine–see second link below.

Thanks, rifle type magazine retainer caught my eye but wasn’t sure why. I know the difference but it didn’t occur to me why it didn’t look right. Will make a point to read Mr. Hill’s article.
There are actually four different variations of the Model 94/95 hybrid carbines (and Rick is aware of them). The least common is the Type 3 (21.75″ barrel, with a ramp front sight milled for a dovetailed sight). The count thus far by variation is as follows;
Variation | Bbl | Front St | Qty |
Type-1 | 20″ | Dovetailed | 34 |
Type-2 | 20″ | Pinned | 15 |
Type-3 | 21.75″ | Dovetailed | 4 |
Type-4 | 21.75″ | Pinned | 11 |
Total | 64 |

That’s interesting Bert. I didn’t know of the type-3. Has it been determined which type of 1895 barrel was used on the type-3? I believe the type-4’s were determined to be from surplus 1895 musket barrels with the pinned front sights. Were there 1895 musket barrels that had dovetailed front sights to make the type-3?
Don
Don,
The information about the various types was in Art Gogan’s research. I believe that he wrote an article about them a long time ago. I do not remember the details at the moment, and do not have all of my notes handy at this time. I have personally seen one of them though. I am looking for another one so that I can get good pictures of it.

All of them that have been verified are SRCs. If you are a WACA member, it is in the Summer 2012 Collector magazine. Be advised that survey list has grown a bit in the past 7 years.

How many are in the survey now? Are there any changes to the serial number ranges? How about the configuration rarity?
I have (66) documented in the survey. No, the serial number range has remained constant, and the configuration rarity is unchanged.

I’ve become quite interested in these but value information is scarce. Other than some very high prices on a well known seller’s site, I can’t find much in the way of what these are selling for. Any one have a feel for what their values are in various conditions? I mean, if there was information in the Red Book what would the values be in the various condition levels?
I Just purchased a ’94/’95 variant with the 21 1/2″ bbl. up in Cody, It is ser# 1,032,624 and is in exc. cond. with about 97% finish I won’t say what I paid but I was offered$4,500.00 at the Denver show last weekend, I didn’t sell it as I’ve been looking for one of these for a long time and this is the best one I’ve seen There was 1 other one at Cody with about 50% finish asking Price was $3.000.00 I don’t think it sold. I hope this helps You.

Henry,
Does your 94/95 hybrid have a pinned front blade, or dovetail mounted front sight? The serial number of your 94/95 hybrid is a new entry for the survey, and it brings the total to (69) identified thus far.

AS a general guideline, I would double the price over a standard 1928 SRC.
