Hey Bert.  What do you think of the serial number on this gun?  Looks like a L to me.  It also has a nickel steel barrel.  Not manufactured in 1897.

The serial number is correct.  All of the early serial numbers in the 100,000+ range looked exactly the same, with the “1” digits that look like and “L”.  The factory letter shows the correct date of manufacture, February 1901.  The rifle itself appears to be correct, albeit with a fair amount of honest use & wear.  The nickel steel barrel is normal for the caliber.

Thanks Bert.  I had looked at my W musket that is near this serial number and age range and the 1 looked like a 1.  You know I don’t collect post 1898 guns and I have never owned a Win. in 30 WCF.  I always use your data when looking at 92’s and 94’s as far as what is antique.
