Hello everyone,
I am actively researching and seeking Winchester Model 1894 .30-30 carbines associated with the Calgary City Police (C.C.P.), particularly examples bearing C.C.P. etchings or markings consistent with early municipal police use.
Documented Context – Canadian Police Use of the Winchester 1894
The Winchester 1894 .30-30 is already well-documented and verified in service with other Canadian provincial police organizations, including:
- Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
- British Columbia Provincial Police (BCP / BCPP)
(with numerous surviving, marked examples and archival inventories confirming issue and later RCMP transfer)
Given this established precedent, Calgary City Police use would be historically consistent with broader Canadian policing practices of the early–mid 20th century.
Information from Calgary Police Archives
“ Our archival records are extremely limited when it comes to equipment procurement prior to the 1970s. We conducted a search for the Winchester 1894 30.30 Carbine, as well as references to Winchester firearms in general, but did not find any results relevant to your research. This was not unexpected, as records from that era tend to focus more on Chief’s orders, citizen complaints, or Calgary Police Commission meeting minutes. Procurement details—whether for firearms, uniforms, vehicles, or motorcycles—were often not retained, and we do not have a Winchester 1894 30.30 Carbine in our artifact collection.
We did, however, locate at least two Calgarynewspaper articles that mention the use of the 30.30 Winchester Carbine by members of the police constabulary. The constabulary was established during World War II to address depleted staffing levels, as many members had enlisted to support the war effort. The articles are attached here. While these are not official archival records, they do suggest that the Winchester Carbine was used for policing purposes both before and after WWII.
It may also interest you to know that many of the historical firearms in our artifact collection bear “C.C.P.” (Calgary City Police) etchings.
This indicates that pieces you may have found or acquired can likely be traced back to earlyCalgary Police use. If helpful, we would be glad to send you a photo of an example of these etchings from our collection.”
