While looking for the barrel date on a 1918 Trench Gun, I found several other markings. Near the receiver CYL was stamped diagonally. Four inches further a shamrock was present. And near halfway down the barrel, a stamp of lRl was present. Can anyone say what these marks are?
Hello Mark,
Winchester was not yet stamping the barrels with the date they were made when the WW I Trench Guns were being manufactured. The stamped makings you found are typical. The “CYL” marking is the bore diameter. The shamrock and IRI are inspector stamps applied during the manufacture of the barrel.
