Well the Model 12 28 gauge and I were able to bag another rabbit today.Saw an other one,just saw the hind legs as it disappeared in the thick stuff.No time to get a shot off.
Out this afternoon,but instead of the Winchester Model 12 28 gauge,I took my old Winchester Cooey Model 84 single shot 28 gauge.Bagged a partridge with it.The old gun still works as well as it did many years ago ,when I and it were much younger.
Saw a rabbit as well,but was unable to get a shot at it.
Out this afternoon with the Winchester Cooey Model 84 28 gauge.Picked up a rabbit.Two other fellows ,hunting the same area, bagged a rabbit as well.

Glad to hear someone is getting something in the woods. Its been some time since I ate rabbit, think the last one I had was BBQ’d over hot coals. Whats your preferred way of cooking those critters?

Usually have them in a stew.A lot of the rabbits(snowshoe hare) I have been getting, I have been giving to some different friends, who dearly love rabbit,but because of age or some other reason, can no longer get rabbits for themselves.
Seem to be quite a few around this year.My guess is they must be at or near the top of their cycle.I have seen years ,when they were in the low end of their cycle, when I would be lucky to get two for the whole season.Perhaps the dry summer we had helped more of the young to live to adulthood.I am thinking that the long dry summer, also allowed them to have two or three litters,as there seem to be quite a few smaller rabbits around.

I’ve been out trying to get enough for a few meals. We don’t have the numbers you are reporting, but they seem to be coming back over the last five years or so. It sounds like you are in a good area for them.
I try for head shots, and it isn’t always easy to get that in the thick stuff, so there are a number of times there is just no shot. I’ve used the snowshoes to get out there, but the snow isn’t that deep and they come off for hunting.
I was worried I might not have “enough gun” here, and carry a few solids in my pocket in case I hit one at dark and could be facing a charge in the morning… Actually, my first “reduced” load was probably too much and I have since switched over to a cast bullet with AA 5744. I’m looking forward to trying that out soon. Figure it’s all good practice with this rifle.

I’m not so sure JB had rabbits in mind when he designed the 1895, but I know you are an over-achiever. Thanks for a good chuckle. Hope you are surviving the Wisconsin winter.

Some of those rabbits can be quite vicious .Many a time ,I have just got a shot off in time as a rabbit would be making a jump for my throat ,with its mouth wide open and strong front teeth already to strike.At times like that, even a .405 Model 1895 is not too much gun.

Youre making me jealous.. We eat rabbit two or three times a weekbut they come from the breeders and 4-H.
The only 28 I have is a Beretta single shot..might have to test drive it next week.

I find the 28 gauge a great gun for upland use.Have tried the 20 gauge,16 gauge and .410 for upland use,but always came back to the good old dependable 28 gauge.
Snowing here today.Hope to get out for a hunt this afternoon,but with the wet snow, it most likely will be wet and messy in the woods.
