Winchester 1892 sn: 479692 (circa 1908)

Caliber: 38 W.C.F.

Bullet: Soft cast, plain base Accurate Mould #40-177L

Load: 12.2 grains Blue Dot for 1,355 fps

Range: 100 yards

Group size: 2 & 7/8″

Comments: I picked this up recently since I’ve been wanting a 38 W.C.F.  I’ll be 70 next year and with these old eyes, that tiny notch in the rear sight is pretty blurry. I could center the front sight reasonably well in windage (1 & 5/8″), but the verticle was hard to make out, so this sweet little rifle is likely much more accurate than I can deliver.

Looks good to me. I generally don’t bother with sporting sights much anymore. I can still find the target with peeps….for now.

Good shooting.  I’m a few years older.  I feel really good if I can put all my shots that close together at 100 yds. with iron sights.

At 100 yards, with iron sights (non-peep sight)… that’s some shooting to be proud of – as it the rifle.

I would be very proud to be able to shoot that group!

Kudos to you!

Is that your standard/preferred load for the 38-40?

I have two pet loads for this rifle. This Blue Dot load is one of them, the other is 18 grains of 5744. Both give about the same accuracy in this rifle, because of it’s excellent bore. If you have one with a bad bore, the Blue Dot might be slightly better, as it has a higher peak pressure more similar to black powder FFG. Both loads give about the same muzzle velocity. I use soft cast bullets (air-cooled wheel weights or pure lead).

That should kill a whitetail. Follow this thread up with a photo of your quarry!

Let me add my 2 cents worth here. That is excellent shooting, even for younger eyes. I have owned several M1892’s and find them all to be very accurate. Most are 44-40’s. Killed my 1st deer’s with a M1892 like yours, but in 44-40. I am very impressed with your shooting skills. Big Larry

I’m often impressed by the accuracy of old Winchesters and I’m even more impressed by someone several years older than me who can shoot that well with sporting sights. It wasn’t too many years ago new production sporting rifles struggled to shoot that well with a machine rest and quality glass. I’d be proud of that group at 50 yards!

Excellent shooting!

Question: Where did you get that target? With that 2″ circle in the.midle, it looks perfect for iron sights and old eyes like mine!

They used to sell this type of target at the local firearms store about 20 years ago. I bought some and whenever I run low, I take one to the local copying center and have another 100 made up.

That is an excellent idea. I’m going to see if I can find some.
