OfflineI have a Whitney-Kennedy in 40-60 win that is in good shape and I would like to shoot it deer hunting! I came across a couple boxes of Jamison Legacy Grade Ammunition 210 Gr RNFP 1,475 FPS velocity and 1,015 FT/LBS energy. Is this to Hot to shoot in this old of a gun? According to what I have found about the original 40-60 win. load it was actually a little hotter! Any thoughts from you more experienced guys sure would be appreciated! Thanks!!

OfflineI have no experience with Whitney Kennedys. If the gun is deemed safe to shoot the 1,475 FPS is about the original black powder speed for a 76 Winchester and the Marlin. Make sure you have the gun looked at by a gunsmith…..It would really make me happier if I knew what and how much powder is in the case. Per Barnes data 21 grains of 4198 would give you about 1,520 fps. I would always start lower and I always use a chronograph to verify the speed.

OfflineThe Whitney Kennedy rifle’s that were chambered for the 40-60 wcf used the same Winchester cartridge as the 1876 Winchester 40-60 wcf . Not saying your rifle is safe to shoot the loads you are referring to , but just for a comparison . I have and shoot four different original 1876 Winchesters in 40-60 wcf . The Bullet weight and velocity that you have listed would not be considered a Hot load judging from what I use in my rifles . As a side note , have shot several deer and wild hog with the 40-60 wcf , its a lot of fun and a very capable cartridge . Good Luck .,,,,DT

OfflineThanks for the reply and information! I have never reloaded anything but would love to start reloading for the 40-60 and a 44 Henry I have! Could you point me in direction for what I will need? I have found new brass and loaded shells for the 40-60 but no bullets or affordable dies or even an old handloader! Thanks from a new member!

OfflineJay for reloading supplies you can try Buffalo Arms Co. they usually have what you would need for reloading components . You may keep an eye on E-Bay for Dies and Reloading Tong Tools . I would recommend getting and reading reloading manuals like Lyman , Hornady and others . These will give you a start with the basics and learning process of reloading . Another good book to have is written by Mike Venturino titled Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West . Hope this helps you . Feel free to PM me with any questions , would be happy to help a new member , if I can . ,,,DT
