I have a 94 Winchester in .30-30 in the safe. It was my dad’s, and it belonged to his brother-in-law before him. The bro-in-law, Uncle Bill to me, dropped dead on Mother’s Day 1971. I recently acquired it when my dad had to go into assisted living, which is a very tough deal. Anyway…
Since I have the rifle I decided to clean it up and take it out and shoot it. It shot okay, but I noticed that the lever loop kind of “pops” on each firing as though the action is trying to come out of battery. I don’t have a lot of experience with 94 Winchesters, so I realize this may be nothing to worry about, but OTOH I also realize there may be something very unsafe about my rifle.
Does anyone have sage advice they’d like to pass along to me on a non-profit basis??

Any good gunsmith should be able to check out the gun and tell you if its safe but here are a few things to check. Is the chamber for oily? If the chamber is oily the shell will put more force on the bolt rather than the shell gripping the chamber. Also just double check to make sure the gun is chambered for the round your using, not that someone rechambered it and didn’t remark the barrel and it could be you have a gun that is worn some.

Thanks Bob. The gun is original and the chamber was clean and dry.

When you close the lever, does it stay up by itself or does it try to open a bit?
