Just purchased a 1946 Model 64 standard and installing a Williams 5D type aperture sight. I would like to replace the very short factory front blade sight with a tall (as tall as practical) and slender beaded blade in an attempt to get the ramp out of the sight picture and open up the view. The setup will be for hunting and I am attempting to get a sight picture as close as possible to that of another gun I shoot which has no ramp and blade dovetailed to the barrel. The Williams sight seems to have enough elevation to accommodate just about any height I choose.
Anyone ever do anything like this or have experience to share?

I generally remove the rear (barrel) sight when using a receiver sight and install a blank. Marble makes a variety of front sights in different heights, bead diameters and colors.

Thanks Mike. I am planning to remove rear but what I was really trying to do was get the sight picture up away from the front sight ramp which blocks a lot of the target. I took sort of a guess and ordered both a Marbles .50H x .34W green fiber opt and a Williams .57H x .34W gold .063 bead. From the catelog pics I like the Williams more slender rear profile better. Hopefully the aperture has enough lift so hoping one of these will work.
I remain curious why Winchester went to the ramp stye front sight. I’m sure for a good purpose but it seems maybe it was more for the cosmetic appeal to me. I find the barrel mounted dovetail sites much better, at least for peep sight application.

Remember raising the front sight will make the gun shoot lower. Sometimes the rear sight can’t be adjusted up far enough to get it back on zero.
