Ok, I’m not the oldest guy here but I’ve been around awhile. I did some ammunition searching this morning of some of the typical mail order supplier sites – such as Natchez and Midway. Not just 9mm, .223, .308 but .270, .30-30, .30-06, even .300 Savage and .35 Remington. All out of stock.
Next stop was gunbroker. I saw two boxes of recent manufacture .30-30 – just ended – had 16 bids and was at $120 – someone then hit the buy-it-now at $135. Add $15 shipping and someone just bought two boxes (40 rounds total) of .30-30 for $150.00.
Our world can sure take strange turns.
P.S. Let’s not forget primers. They’ve been out of stock everywhere for months – except gunbroker. Here’s a box of 1000 with five hours to go – it’s at $235 and they’ll be $35 shipping on top of that. So, if it ends with no further bidding, someone will pay $270 for 1000 primers – 27 cents a primer! $27 bucks for a box of 100. I can’t get my head around that.

I’m sure glad I stocked up on all calibers over the years. Check Wards Auction for ammo. I bought 6 boxes of 30-30 and 6 boxes of 32 WS in their August auction. I paid right around $200 for all 12 boxes. All factory Winchester, Remington, and Federal.

Everything is hard to find. You just have to sit at the computer and search and search every day. If or when you find something for a decent price buy all you can afford. I started stocking up a few years ago so I’m not so bad off. My main problem is primers. Gunbroker has a bunch of thieves selling primers for 5 times the regular price. I probably won’t run out for months but when I do I hope I won’t have to pay Gunbroker prices.

I don’t know if we should consider these gunbroker sellers thieves. I say that because they are often not pricing their items. Rather, that simply start their auctions at a penny and let bidders determine for themselves what they want to pay. But still, they annoy me. I suspect some of these sellers are the same guys who would line up at Walmart and buy whatever .22 rimfire came in. They would then mark it way up and peddle it at the next gunshow or put on an internet auction. Primers should be a concern. While a regular person can ship ammo to most places, primers are a different story. You need to be hazmat certified to ship primers. I strongly suspect a lot of these sellers are not hazmat certified.
You’ve forgotten the Obammy years? Thought it could NEVER get that bad again…but it has, & I was one of the many caught napping. Especially hard to understand is the shortage of Aguila .22RF–Mexicans couldn’t afford the shutdowns or slowdowns that US factories were subjected to.
What can we expect NOW? Bad to worse!
I’m in rural Wisconsin and have not seen ammo supply problems. Every little town has a sport shop or a gas station with hunting ammo, rifle or shotgun. The selection is not as wide but still adequate, prices haven’t changed. I suppose if people start hoarding that will change quickly. I have not been to the big sport shops lately so I can’t say about loading supplies.
Wisconsin does not have back ground checks for ammo or toilet paper yet! T/R

I do remember past shortage years. But I don’t ever remember primers or .30-30 ammunition going for the prices they are now. The question is, is this just another phase? How long will it last? And of course, as you suggest, bad to worse is a definite possibility.
I also didn’t mean to suggest that all ammunition is out of stock. .416 Rigby, 7x65R, .30-378 Weatherby .338 Lapua (and others) remain available at standard prices.

Good news–I’ve always wanted a Rigby, just remains for me to find out what I can get for my house.
It is an odd world indeed when .416 Rigby costs less than 30-30……

Keep this quiet. If our Governor hears this I need to start hoarding TP. I was told the other day that our ammo background check law that got thrown out just as the Chinese pandemic started is scheduled to go back to court as early as this week. Gov Nuisance was able to get a stay for 25 days. It has been about 8 months now.

Wow!! I am sitting on a literal GOLD MINE!! I have 2-dozen boxes of 30-30 ammo I bought at a Rite-Aid store (when they were clearancing all of their firearms related merchandise a number of years ago) that I paid $7.99 a box for ($191.76 + $16.30 sales tax for a grand total of $208.60). Today it is worth $2,376 !!! I guess I should have been buying ammo instead of old Winchesters…

It seems that there is a bit of panic buying going on.
Yesterday, I dropped in to my local Gun-shop in Waterloo Ontario, CANADA
While I was there they received two telephone calls from American residents hoping to buy ammo and have it shipped South across the border.
They cannot do this.
The Gun-shop staff told me that they are getting multiple calls like this every day.

There’s a lot of calibers I don’t have or I sold the rifle but by god I buy it if it’s available & rare. 405, 35WCF, 33, 40-65, 40-82, 45-75, 25-35. I find it, I buy it if the price is near reasonable.
Some of these guys on GB just throw an astronomical price out there & hope someone with deep pockets will buy it. All I’ll be doing is looking.

Hoarding feeds on itself. Esp. when speculators buy up ammo not for their own use, but to re-sell at a profit.

Big change in a week, went downtown and could not buy a box of 270. The only rifle ammo on the shelves was 300 win mag and 243. People bought in mass quantity to resell. .
The 22LF ammo that sold for $60 a brick during the last shortage was sold at gun shows for $25 later. I’ll reload my own until this passes. T/R
