After thorough bore cleaning with Hoppe’s solvent (smokeless or BP formula), patches come out clean. Subsequent patches with CLP for storage purposes come out dirty for what seems like eternity. Repeating process with solvent and dry patches, CLP patches are dirty again. I do not ever recall getting the CLP patches to clean-up completely. I have seen this in multiple bores of different calibers, using both smokeless and BP.
Does anybody know what is going on here? Have you seen this yourself?

I love CLP but I don’t use it for a spotless cleaning of the barrel. It does clean, lubricate and protect but it does leave a film. I guess that is the lubricating and protecting part. Don’t worry about the patches looking oily.

I’ve only had one rifle bore produce a clean CLP patch. I can clean a rifle with any of my regular solvents and when I run a CLP patch thru afterwards it looks dirty, noticed it years ago and I’m not sure what to think of it. I don’t think CLP is very effective as a primary cleaner for the type loads I shoot but I’ve been using it to lube and protect bores after cleaning with other solvents for years and the wet CLP patch always looks dirty even though the solvent patch comes out nearly clean. I think it has some penetrating or other property that gets deposits other cleaners miss. I sometimes take advantage of this behavior by running a dry patch thru a bore that’s been sitting in the safe with CLP in the bore. Sometimes I wonder if I forgot to clean it before I put it away.
