Does anyone know what was used to trim cases in the 1800’s?  I don’t recall seeing a tool for this.  Maybe it wasn’t as big of a problem?  I’m sure a file would have worked.

I think that cartridge case “stretching” is a problem that came along with high pressure bottle neck cases. I haven’t seen case stretching in the BP era cartridge cases I load but I’m mainly watching the 32-40, 32-20 and 38-40. Most have been fired less than ten times. I have some 45-70 and other “straight wall” cases that have been fired dozens of times with no stretching. I’d venture a guess that case trimming wasn’t required until the 30 WCF came along, possibly the 30-40 Krag or .303 British.
