Recently purchased a Model 64 Winchester in .32 Winchester Special calibre.Had some loads made up that I tried out at the range today using the 170 grain Hornady bullet.They were okay,but I am thinking the rifle could do better.Any one have a pet load using the 170 grain bullet and IMR powder?
Also tried out a new load in my Model 1886 Winchester .45-70.That load worked out really well.
Hi 28 gauge I like 4198 for 32 spcl. I shoot a couple 94 rifles. Lately having good luck with 4227 as well. Either IMR or Hodgens, I like the 170 jacketeds, which were cheap and abundant in Canada, now drying up , so am shooting more GC lead around the same weight with the same powders with good groups. I am generally loading the lightest loads, that will group at 300 M
Brad has been shooting 32 spcl with good posted result in this forum, lately and will likely chime in

I only had two shells loaded with IMR 4198,but it showed good promise as the two holes were very close together.IMR 4320 looked not bad either. Surprising to me, it looked better than the IMR loads I had using 3031 and 4895.Have not seen loads for IMR 4227 powder in .32 Winchester Special .Are they light loads?
I have a box of 170 grain Hornady that I purchased from Doug in Sask.Also was able to pick up a box at the last gun show I was to on the past weekend.Only box I saw at the show.
My shooting is usually done off hand or at best resting the forend ,while I stand and shoot at 50 yards.Not looking for the hardest shooting load.Just something that looks good on paper.
I haven’t used the Hornady 170 although I have some here. You saw I did use the Hornady Flex Tip bullet. I am going to go back to 32WS sometime in the future and record some results, probably with another 1894 that I own. I was able to get quite a few of the older Speer 170s for 32WS recently and want to try those too. I found 32WS to be a very nice cartridge to reload so far. I don’t like to load them very stiff either, the recoil is not bad and the cases measure well without much stretching. I neck size them. Now that I have a chronograph it will be nice to see what my loads are doing.
I have become a huge fan of IMR 4064 in the last few years. It seems that there is a good load for every gun I am shooting with that powder. I haven’t spent a lot of time with the faster powders and I prefer to use something that fills a lot of the case when possible and the results are good. As far as any pet loads go I can’t say as your gun is probably different than my gun. I haven’t tried the faster burning powders in 32WS and haven’t had the need to yet. I have recently used Reloader 7 in 30WCF with 150s however.
Good luck with it and I’m sure you’ll find something that sticks.

listings for 4227 are getting scarcer for many Cals and the newer manuals often have reduced amounts listed. I dont have the source to reference for this load but have been using about 16 gr new IMR 4227 Canada manufacture and RCBS 32 170 GC. Didnt crony, but seems mild and works well. I find this powder works well for many old Calibers for me where it is not listed in the top choices, such as 32-20, 44-40, 38-55, 45-70, surprisingly 40-82, all BP cartridges.
I think that the fact that low volume of powder needed in large capacity cases ,gives potential for a double charge, and the possibility for it to be used in old weaker guns has contributed to the declining recipe listings, and popularity of 4227. A hard to beat powder for 32-40, its best claim to fame, similar capacity, but straight sided. Probably best in straight side and gently sloping shoulders

I’m chasing 170gr gc loads now too, but with H4895 and RL7.
The following sites are some I’ve bookmarked in researching for loads. These have IMR information for you. Do you have a copy of Waters’ “Pet Loads.” If not, I can look in that for specific IMR powders in the .32WS.

Do you use any filler when loading the 16 grains of IMR 4227 in the 32 Winchester Special,25-20?
No I do not have a copy of Ken Waters ,Pet Loads,From the Woods.
IMR 4064 is one of the IMR powders I do not have.Will have to get some to try the next chance I have to pick some up.
I never used any filler with 32 Spcl loads.
I have used filler in larger capacity straight sided cases, with a bit of improvement over no filler in below freezing weather , but have not needed any in summer temps, where I dont find 4227 that position sensitive

Out to the range yesterday.Loads worked quite well,but getting a flyer every now and then.Most likely me.Best results with IMR 3031 and IMR 4320.
Rifle was shooting to the right.Tapped the rear sight till I got the rifle shooting close to the centre.Did not want to tap it again as it was so close ,I thought too hard of a tap would have it shooting to the left.Figured best ,to leave well enough alone.
Glad you found some loads that work well for you. I’ve found quite a few older Speer 170 grain bullets from a few different sources in the last month and I will need to try them one of these days. Haven’t had enough of the Hornady bullets yet to try those.

Yes, finding bullets for the .32 Winchester Special is not easy.Bought a box of Hornady 170 grain bullets from two different places.That was all they had of any .32 Special bullets.
Talking to a fellow on the telephone a day or two ago who did not have any .32 Special bullets in stock, but thought he could get some Hornady .32 Special bullets.Told him to get me two boxes.Missed out on two boxes of Winchester silvertip .32 Special bullets a fellow had advertised on a gun site.Another fellow beat me to the punch.
Both brands are out there in some old stores and gunshows , and both worked well for me. But decline of the once very popular 32’s in general has ended demand for new manufacture, and our long time glut of these bullets at cheap prices is dwindling . I have always stocked up in quantity when found cheap, and am glad now as they work great in 32-40 ( not crimped but tight neck tension) ,of course 32 spcl, never shot 32 Rem

The Hornady 165 FTX bullet seems to be very available by me right now. Can always save the 170 FP bullets for hunting if you prefer them.

Yes the .32 Special has been in decline for quite sometime now.I dare say that reloading components will get harder to find in the future.
Should be able to find a few bullets at the next gun show I get to.Most likely that will not be until the fall.There are some sooner,but they are a bit farther away than I care to travel and we should soon get very busy at work for the summer.
