Ok fellows, I need some help please. I’ve owned 5 standard grade pre ’64 Model 70’s and they were all wonderfully accurate. I’ve got two of the early XTR’s in 257 and 7mm that are great shooters. I’ve always wanted a straight comb pre ’64 Featherweight in 270 and finally found one. I’ve tried 3 different powder charges over a 130 grain partition an at 100 yards off sandbags, a 5 inch 3 shot group is about average. All the stock bolts are tight as are the bases and rings. What am I doing wrong? Many thanks.

Try some factory loads or a proven handload. Which powder(s) are you using?

First thing I would check is bedding. Makes sure barrel channel has not warped, and as a result putting uneven pressure on barrel somewhere along barrel channel. My experience with Featherweights has always been that they are very susceptible to throwing shots when barrel get’s warm, which happens fast with that lightweight barrel. Also, check the crown on barrel to make sure it is not damaged.

I would also try some conventional Spitzer soft point bullets in a medium weight for the caliber. Based on my previous experience, the Nosler Partitions make a good hunting bullet, but are not the most accurate, when compared to conventional bullets. I also find that for the most part, powder has a lesser effect on accuracy that does the correct bullet.

Last but certainly not least is condition of bore. Have you checked for copper build up? Give it a good cleaning.

Steve
