A friend and I went to the range yesterday with three Winchesters.A Model 55 .30-30,a Model 64 .30-30 and a Model 1886 .45-70.It was the first time in over seven years that I had fired a big bore rifle.
Although there was a strong head wind and light snow blowing in our faces at times, we had a great time and enjoyed ourselves very much.Sorry no pictures as we did not take any and even if we would have ,my computer skills are too poor to be able to post them anyway. 🙂
We had some hand loaded ammunition as well as some factory stuff.All worked well and was in the target area for clean bagging of game.Kind of surprised me, as the strong wind and snow blowing in the face I thought would cause a few fliers. 🙂
Glad to hear you had a good time. The weather hasn’t been very cooperative here either.

The handloaded cartridges I had I loaded back in the 1989/95 time frame.All shot well .
We are going to try to get back out again at the end of the month.This time I will take my Model 1895 .405 and pre 64 Model 70 .30-06.Will use handloaded ammunition in both.This ammunition like the cartridges I used before was loaded back in the 1989/95 area.
That was the last time when I was right into rifle shooting and rifle loading.Still have a fair bit of ammo loaded from that time. 🙂
Not sure just what rifles my friend will take.

I had a quick trip to the range last week. Only got off two 5-shot groups at 100 yards with my 38-55. The results were 2" and 1 & 7/8". I want to get back this week for a more extended shoot, but they are forecasting rain every day this week.
Yes the weather has not been great here either.It would appear that your rifle is working well for you.
Have never owned a .38-55 although I have seen many.A lot of the old fellows swore by them in the thick woods for deer hunting.

Shooting pre 64 Winchesters Model 1895 .405,Model 70 .30-06 and Model 94 .30-30.Good day and a fun shoot.Handlaoded ammunition used in all three rifles.
Now have to get time to get loading so we can go another time. 🙂
Have some hand cast bullets made that I cast in an old Winchester .45-70 bullet mould.Think I will load these up and give them a try in the .45-70 on my next trip to the range. 🙂
What do you like for .30-30 loads 28 gauge?
Did some hand loading today for future use. Most was for .30-30. I guess I’d better start learning about cast bullets soon.

The only cast bullets I have used have been in the .45-70.Would be interesting to try .30-30 cast bullets.Will have to keep my eye open for a .30-30 mould.
I like IMR 3031 and IMR 4895 for use in my .30-30 rifles.I use the data listed for them on the IMR Powder site.They work well for me.
What do you like to use for powder in your .30-30 rifles?
I’ve been experimenting with IMR 4895, Win 748, Reloader 15 and BL-C(2). I also tried some faster powder in a 125 Sierra bullet load, IMR 4198. I’ll have to try IMR 3031 someday in .30-30.
I seem to get good accuracy with BL-C(2) and I’d like to dial in loads with that one and 748. So far they are burning up very clean with WLR primers. I also had accurate results with IMR 4895 with the 125 gr. Sierra FP. I recently "started over" so to speak with my reloading process. I don’t have a lot of experience hand loading, but when I first started I went through the starting loads and moved up in my powder charge pretty fast. Now I’m staying down there longer and trying to find an accuracy load there. Probably better for the rifle and my shoulder. I do think I will start learning about cast bullets for the .30-30.

Just getting back into rifle shooting and reloading myself.Last time I did any was back in the mid 1990’s.
In the .30-30 I have always used the Hornady 170 grain bullets.
Tried other powders ,but settled on IMR for the best all around results.At least for the type of shooting I did ,they always seemed to work well.
I favoured the Winchester WLR primers as well.
Much easier to load for the .405 Winchester nowadays.Back then before the reintroduced .405 one had to hoard their .405 cases and/or make ones out of another cartridge case.I purchased the RCBS dies to make .405 cases from 9.3X74R cases.
At the last gun show I was at I purchased a new box of Hornady .405 shells.The first new .405 shells I ever bought. 🙂
Have a box of the new Barnes .405 TSX bullets and two boxes of Hornady bullets on the way to me.
Do you load for other cartridges besides the .30-30?
I also load for .33 WCF and also .303 Savage, which is very close to .30-30 if you are not familiar with that one. My .303 Savage loads are very similar to .30-30 so far. I’ve had good luck with IMR 4895 for .33 WCF.
I’ve been trying all kinds of bullets in the .30-30. I’ve found the Hornady 150 grain RN #3035 to be accurate with my loads so far, as well as some of the Sierra bullets. I haven’t spent much time on the Hornady 170 grain for my .30-30 yet, but I’m sure it would do well too.
I’ve been scouring the shows for some bullets too. Thought it was starting to ease up around here, but it seems to have actually gotten worse as far as availability goes. I was always lucky to find bullets a few months ago, so OK there anyway.

Have never fired a .303 Savage ,but know of them.
Use to load for the .33 Winchester.Used IMR 3031 and 200 grain Hornady bullets.Only had a few .33 cases,but use to make them from .45-70 cases.

Which range do you shoot at? Reason I ask is that I am from Nova Scotia. Just curious. I’d love to get out to shoot some of my old Winchesters, but finding the time is the problem these days.
