Regarding sizing 44-40 W-W cases:
My W-W cases are very difficult to size regardles whether I use spray-on case lube or RCBS gel case lube. Very slight improvement when letting sprayed cases set 12 hours!!!
My R-P cases are very easy to size regardless of which lube is used.
Does anybody else have difficulties such as this with W-W cases?
I am wondering if I should buy new dies or more R-P cases? or what to do?

Try tumbling the cases in corn cob polishing media. It will put a real fine polish on the brass.

For sizing try Imperial Die wax. Just spread Very thin on RCBS lube pad with wax paper and roll cases on it Its amazing stuff the only danger is getting too much on especially in neck area and cases can get those forming dimples

I use Hornady dies, never lube my 44 WCF cases (both Winchester and Remington) and never have any problem. I wonder if your chamber is allowing the brass to expand to an unusually large size?
When I do use lube, I use a 50-50 mix of castor oil and lanolin, both available at the local pharmacy. It works better than the Hornady lube. In fact, I’ve resized a bunch of Starline 45-90 cases down to 40-82 in just one plunge of the handle using that lube. Just a very light coat, or you will put dimples in your cases.

I measured 5 samples each of Winchester fired cases & sized cases.
Measured about at the mid point of main body of the case.
The fired cases are about .001" above specs. on dia.
Sized cases are about .007" below specs on dia.
Seems like that I need different dies.

Looks like there is nothing wrong with your chamber. It must be the dies. The other option is to neck size only. I actually prefer to work the brass as little as possible, so I prefer to neck size only if possible.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounded good idea but could not find source of neck sizing die for 44-40. Therefore ordered new RCBS sizing die.

Most of my normal sizing dies can be adjusted to neck size only by raising the die up a bit so only the first 1/4" or so of the neck is sized. This won’t always work, of course, if the lower part connects first.

Hey Kirk Ive been shooting 38-40 recently and tried your no lube suggestion on Win , RP, and Dominion and was surprised that I only had to lightly lube 1 in every 10, to FLS ,and none for the M die (HSS). That thin brass is good for reloading if you are careful, and you are right , certainly not a lube problem

Problem Solved:
I received my new RCBS 44-40 Sizing die.
Dropped a "fired" Winchester case into my old die. It protruded 3/4" above the die. Dropped the same case into the new die. It dropped in 1/4" farther.
Can now easily size all Winchester & R-P cases with whatever lube.
Mid body diametral dimensions are compatible with Specs.
The sized cases fit correctly into new Winchester barrel and two old barrels.
My old die was to small!!!! Manufacturing error or old standards?
