OfflineThe most commonly recommended smokeless powder I see is 5744, a can of which TxGunNut has generously gifted me and which I propose to use first.
I had thought to backstop this against future need but there are no suppliers with inventory except a couple whose Websites glow red in the dark because they claim to have 8 pound kegs of 5744 in stock but want Bitcoin or Zelle in payment…..
I have good supplies of 3031, 4756 and 4759, and 4064 on hand, as well as Bullseye, Unique, and some 231.
Bearing in mind I intend to shoot 300 grain cast lead at 1300 to 1400 fs, does anyone have a favorite recipe using any of those powders?
Also. I’m aware Winchester designed the 45-90 WCF case to fit within the longest OAL the 1886 will accommodate. I don’t have a Lyman handbook yet and wonder if someone could please give me comfortable max OAL and trim length numbers for the cartridge?.
Thanks.,
Bill

Case length is 2.4, COAL is dependent on the bullet selected, 2.8 for shorter bullets suitable for a repeater to 3.3 for the heavies. In addition to 5744 I’m thinking 4198 would be a good choice. Source Lyman 50th.

OfflineThanks Mike. I haven’t run all the traps yet but 4198 seems to be unobtainable at present. At a guess, all that IS available is likely to be overruns of powders for military application.- if.that.
