This evening I slugged the bore on my old 1876, 45-75, #2332. It measures .4595″ which may explain why I have accuracy and key hole issues with the Meister .458″ 350 gr bullets, 22gr 5744 powder @ 1100 fps. Anyone have suggestion as to where I may find some .460″ bullets as I have exhausted all sources on Google. I do recall seeing bullets sized in .458 through .461 some years ago but am unable to source them now.

very best,

Darrin

Take a look at the Montana Bullet Works website under the Big Bore section. They have several .45 caliber bullets that can be sized as large as .460″. I’ve had good results with their 535 grain Postell sized at .460″ in my 1885 High Wall using black powder.

Thank you Gus,

I had overlooked the big bore section. I will give these a try.

If I’m not mistaken they also use a bit softer alloy. When combined with Holy Black a softer lead bullet obturates (bumps up) to fill the bore. Some .458″ jacketed bullets designed for the more sedate .45 cartridges do a remarkable job of bumping up with smokeless powder due to thin jackets and pure lead cores.

Good insight Mike, I did place an order for some of their 340 gr .460″ bullets with the smokeless pre lube. I may not get to test them until after my upcoming shoulder surgery but at this point I need something to look forward to during rehab.

Thank you,

Darrin
