I have 7 Ballard rifles in various bores. Several are in 32-40 and I want to pre-load several hundred rounds to take to the range. Where can I find the casings? Are they reformed from a current cartridge or can they be purchased, ? Also would need the proper dies and are they available? I haven’t shot these rifles in a long time and was going to sell them at auction, but just couldn’t let them go. Decided to shoot them again. Last shot at an ASSRA shoot in Indiana.
Cases & even loaded ammo are “around,” but usually take some time to find. Cases have been made up in batches in recent years; they sell out, then become hard, but certainly not impossible, to find. Dies are still in production, but expensive.
However, here are some available right now on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/32-40-Ballard-Winchester-Snap-Caps-Cowboy-Action-Western-1894-32-Dummy-Rounds/283706483153?hash=item420e3961d1:m:m7eAuM2lYeZfZOwlyJ0TtVA
The seller is calling them “snap caps,” because that’s the only way to get around eBay’s prohibition on selling ammo.
Should you eventually decide to part with some of your Ballards, I’d appreciate hearing about what you have. My email: [email protected].

Wow, that’s cheap! Can’t believe some are putting themselves through the aggravation of re-forming 38-55!

Powder Valley had some in December. RCBS makes the dies in their Cowboy series, got a set from Midway. I reformed a few cases from older 38-55 cases but wasn’t very happy with the results. Probably would have been better after annealing or with newer brass.
