That is because the early guns were serial numbered and the later guns were not. If yours has a serial number, send me a PM and I can tell you approximately when it was made. If it does NOT have a serial number we can play 20 questions on your gun’s features and I can get you close to the manufacture date base on the component changes.

Winchester applied the serial number to the receivers. Retail sales chains such as A&F and G&H applied a number to the barrel for their internal records.
Since your 77 does not a have a receiver number it means it is a later version since the early rifles were serial numbered on the receiver and the later rifles were not.
With a good set of pictures we can narrow down the date of production a bit more based on the stock forend and receiver features.
