Roger,

It would have a checkered steel butt plate like the one pictured below that’s on my M61 with serial number 652.

I hope this helps.

That checkered steel butt plate was used on some other Winchester rifles but probably sized a little different than on the M61.

I’m thinking the M75 Target, M70 etc.  Those may be a little bigger but could be resized for the somewhat smaller butt plate on the M61.

Picked up a Winchester model 61 four digit serial number made in 1932 what butt plate should be on it?

The checkered steel butt plate was used on all Model 61 rifles until about mid 1958 when the black plastic style was introduced.  You may find the very occasional steel type on rifles into 1960.

Roger,

The Model 94 Carbines manufactured Post WW II used that style butt plate.  I do not know if it is exactly the same size as those used on the Model 61, but I suspect that they are.

it appears a slight width difference – no? or is it just the angle?

It’s just the angle of the rifles and the camera.  I guess I could pull them both off and overlay them.  But I probably won’t.  It would make ZEERO sense for Winchester to make two almost identical butt plates that had that small a difference.

Deg,

I thought the same thing when I first looked at it, but decided on what Michael has claimed, after looking at it closely. It’s the camera angle.

Winchester was too smart to make a butt plate, that could only be used on one model. They we’re very cost effective in their early times of production.

Totally makes sense. I figured it was the angle.
