Interested in any information regarding my Model 61 and Model 62A Winchester Rifles. (Including Date of Manufacture, etc.)
Model 61 – Serial # 148317 .22 S, L, and LR
Model 62A – Serial # 274596 .22 S, L, and LR
I have just recently been made aware that there are numerous errors in most of the Online DOM charts, and would like to have the correct information for my records, as well as any other documentation that might be available.
Is there an explanation for the previous errors? Does anyone have a source for serial numbers and date ranges for these firearms?
Also, is there a source of information for the Model 67 single-shot bolt action, and also the Model 250 lever-action rifles.
Many thanks to Bert Hartman for the Date of Manufacture information he sent me for my Model 90 .22 wrf rifle – DOM April, 1928.
Thanks in advance! Appreciate all the information that is available on this forum, and the knowledgeable people who are willing to help. I am a new member of WACA. Jim Dahlquist
Jim,
If you select Resources->When Was Your Winchester Made? from the top of this page, or click on the link on the front page of this site, you can look up the correct DOM.
SN 148317 was manufactured in 1950 and SN 274596 in 1959 1949.
Sometimes if there is a current survey on the model in question the curator of that survey may have more specific statistical information.

Thanks Steve! I appreciate your reply.I believe you meant to put 1949 for the s/n 274596. Correct?
I was hoping someone might be able to give me the month, like Bert H. did for my Model 90.
Appreciate the help.
Jim D.
Jim,
Model 62A serial number 274596 was manufactured in November 1949.
Model 61 serial number 148317 was manufactured in June 1950.
This information can be found in Ned Schwing’s excellent reference book covering both of those models.

Unfortunately you can buy a nice 61 or 62 for what you’ll pay for a set of those excellent reference books. I wish they would put out another publication of them.

For information on the Model 67 you should get a copy of To the Dreams of Youth – Winchester .22 Single Shot Rifle by Herbert Houze. It is an excellent book covering the pre-1964 single shot .22 rifles produced by Winchester.
They can still be found for less than $75. Here is an example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/To-the-Dreams-of-Youth-Winchester-22-CaliberSingle-Shot-Rifle-First-Edition/142706429774?hash=item2139f74f4e:g:AfwAAOSwnFdaly0r

Glad you got it, I thought you already had this book otherwise I would have recommended it to you long ago.

Guess I had the wonderful slide action vol 1&2 on my mind when I made the original comment on the cost. Glad I did.

Vince.
I saw on your posts that you specialize in pre 64 rimfire. I was at a central Texas auction a few weeks ago. There was a Model 61 .22 MAG. Serial no. 344919. (Like new)This is obviously a very late “cleanup” rifle. The last number I found reference to is 343976. I was curious what if anything your reference book (Schwing) has for last serial no. Thanks for comments.

In my relatively short collecting career the best investment I’ve made is books for my reference library. One paid for itself before I finished reading it. I don’t have the experience many members have but my little library has helped me avoid mistakes and recognize rare specimens.

Yep, my philosophy has always been to buy the book, then the rifle. I try to buy every new Winchester book that is published. I usually get 2 copies, one to use as a “working copy” and the other to put away and keep pristine. I am very happy to have bought the Schwing set, first editions for $40 (for both) when they were first published, the Houze Model 52 book for $28 and the first edition Charles Key book on the Model 61 for $19.95 (in 1987) among many, many others.
The price on good quality Winchester reference books seems to increase faster than the value of the actual rifles (hence the 2nd “pristine copy” I keep).

Hello Tom,
I have been working on a research survey of the Model 61 rifle for over 6 years now. In that time I have cataloged just over 5000 individual rifles. The serial number sequence is pretty consistent up to SN 349288. Then, some how I have 2 rifles in the 372xxx range and one at 386xxx!!??? S oa gap of more than 20,000 rifles that I can not explain.
The rifle with SN 344919 was just sold in January at A&S Auction as lot #93. That puts it some 5000 rifles from the sequential end of production.
