Just for the learn, as I am not interested in the item, is this an original confirmation rifle if you know? Thanks, Peter

That is a tough question with that particular seller.

For the rifle you are asking about the butt stock has been sanded and refinished.  The butt plate screws have been polished and reblued.  I don’t see any glaring problems with the overall  configuration but I can only view with my phone so no guarantees….

You’re certainly right about that seller. I see that they have received a negative since the last time I checked on them, and the one negative was on a Winchester with the red “WINCHESTER” logo on the receiver. I guess I was just not aware of the 62A coming in that configuration, that late in the build. Peter

Yes, they made the M62A in that configuration, but I have to wonder about the finish on that one. The roll marked gallery guns are very desirable so I believe they are a prime candidate to be faked, or at least restored to potentially double the value of a standard M62A. I had one for a short time a couple years ago that looked very much like this one, but it was a 1949 gun. I sold it off quickly after I became more and more suspicious that it had been restored. I think I bought and later sold it for $1700. The one thing that tripped me up was that when I pulled the loading tube out I could see the darker stain of the normal style loading port on the opposite side of the tube. It appeared that someone had driven the locking pin to the other side so a nice clean silver portion showed up through the triangular loading port. Cool gun, but hard to find one that is correct. Ned Schwing shows one in his book from 1956. I guess I didn’t realize they were made that late.

I totally agree about the seller!  I would tend to think faked!

For comparison, here’s a few pictures of my M62A Gallery gun with the “Winchester” roll mark, SN  369774, together with the tie down strap.  Note the blue wear on the barrel and mag tube from that strap.

The gun with the strap was a walk in a gun show about 10 years ago.  Obviously, I bought it.

Hope this helps

Jolly

I have a “gallery” M 62a not in very clean condition, on mine the triangular loading port is blued, the fact that this one is not on a pristine looking rifle is worrying.

Jolly, thanks for the pictures so we now know what a real one is supposed to look like. Peter
