looking at a Winchester model 56 sporting rifle with stainless steel barrel with checkered stock and rubber butt. it doesn’t have a with a magazine with it. what should be on the bottom of the magazine the 1919 patent or the Winchester trade mark one?

The magazine you need for your Model 56 will have the 1919 patent date on the magazine base plate, and the follower will be marked as to caliber: either .22 SHORT or .22 LONG R.

Thanks… 22 Short or 22 Long Rifle?  Do you have pictures of the rifle?

Sometime these scarce rifles can bring big bucks. The last stainless M56 I saw was $2,500 and that was 35 years ago. As for the magazine, the original mag will be hard to find and very expensive.Took me years to find the correct magazine for my M56 Short.  Hope you can make a deal on this rare gun at a fair price. Originality is the key here. Let the forum folks guide you.  Big Larry

Looks like someone put a coat of black paint on that rifle.

Yes… Winchester did it, as that was the standard finish on the factory Stainless Steel barrels.

Paint will come up with your finger nail if thy applied primer you would see it. Winchester Jap black is more durable you cant blue stainless in this period but still will scratch. seller had a 10 round and a 5 round with the correct engraved magazines i think for 56s only.

Interesting. I think the Model 57s used the same marked carrier mags. Both my 56 and 57 have a marked follower.

Steven I was surprised when the seller said that he had two magazines that went with it then in the back of my head I remember you saying good luck trying to find one.

I have a Model 52 ser. #24344 that came with a 5 round magazine with that .22 Long Rifle marking.  Is that incorrect for a Model 52 of that vintage?   RDB

I never heard of a 52 with a marked mag, but JWA will know for sure. Feel free to sell it to me, as I have a spare 57 that needs it LOL.

The Winchester 52 magazines had a marked follower, like the one above, until about 1930.
